5 Uses of Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a succulent plant that grows well i tropical climates. This plant is easily grown and has a lot of health benefits. For centuries, it has been used for beneficial medicinal purposes.

Aloe vera is a plant with amazing health benefits but you should note that prolonged consumption of it is not advisable because it increases the risk of colorectal cancer. It may also cause electrolyte imbalance due to its laxative effect and oral consumption is not recommended for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. It can also lower blood glucose to a dangerously low level in people with diabetes.


Healing of Burns

Aloe vera is referred to as the “burn plant” mainly because of its effectiveness in treating certain burns. It can be used as a topical medication in the treatment of first-degree burns and second-degree burns. First degree burns affect only the first layer of the skin while second-degree burns affect the first and the second layers of the skin. While aloe vera is effective in treating first-degree burns and second-degree burns, it is not effective in treating third-degree burns and fourth-degree burns. Aloe vera contains polyphenols and other compounds which gives it its antioxidant property and helps to prevent the growth of certain bacteria, fungi and viruses. It contains compounds, such as aloin, which give it its anti-inflammatory property.

Getting Rid of Dental Plaque

One of the best ways to prevent tooth decay and gum diseases is by avoiding the build-up of plaque. Pure aloe vera can be used instead of a regular mouth wash to get rid of dental plaques. Aloe vera gel doesn’t contain abrasives found in toothpaste and this makes it less harsh on the teeth, making it a better alternative for people with sensitive teeth. Aloe vera’s antioxidant properties help to get rid of free radicals that can cause damage. It also helps in treating gingivitis, mouth sores, lichen planus and other oral and dental diseases.

Reduces Constipation

Aloe vera contains a latex (which is sticky and yellow) under its skin. This latex contains anthraquinones ( such as aloin and barbaloin) which are natural laxatives. Taking aloe vera can help with constipation but keep in mind that consuming too much of it can worsen the symptoms. Aloe vera’ s taste is bitter, so, swallowing it might not be enticing but you can add some honey to it to make it easier on the tongue.

Makeup Removal

Aloe vera gel can be used to remove makeup due to its gentleness on the skin and its moisturising property. Just put a little bit of 100% aloe vera gel on a cotton ball and swipe it across your face to remove the makeup. Before using it, make sure you are not allergic to it by applying just a little bit of it on your skin first (not necessarily your face) to see if you’ll react to it.

Stabilised aloe vera gel contains about 75 nutrients. These nutrients include vitamins, anti-inflammatories, amino acids, enzymes, sugars, sterols ad salicyclic acid. It also contains some amounts of calcium, copper, chromium, sodium, selenium, magnesium, potassium, manganese and zinc. Aloe vera is also one of the only plant sources of vitamin B-12 which makes it important to vegans and vegetarians. Taking these nutrirnts helps to keep the body healthy and prevent diseases.
